Step 1: Develop your vision for your pool
The first thing you want to do is clearly define a vision that roughly fits your budget. This is important because it enables you to properly communicate what you want to see changed — where you want us to start, where we should stop, and what the budget limitations are. In order for us to provide the best possible service to you, we want a clear understanding of your desired outcome so we can deliver a solution that’s on point.
Most major pool renovations require more than resurfacing and waterline tiles. They can include structural landscaping work such as pool surrounds, paving, coping, decking, water features, retaining walls, cabanas and outdoor entertainment areas. It’s important to carefully consider these additional options before we begin because they could be just what your backyard needs.
Other things to consider are pool equipment and plumbing. Does the location of the existing equipment make sense given the changes that you are wanting to make? The more you can communicate, the better the outcome. We are always going to be able to add our ideas and recommendations, but it is all about what you want in the end!
Step 2: Set a tentative budget for your pool
You are probably thinking, how can I set a budget if I haven’t asked for any quotes yet? Well, let’s see if we can help you with that. Pool renovation is not cheap, however, like all renovations, this is an investment in your most important asset; your home!
Considering all the potential items that you may want in the planning phase and budgeting for them is important. To try to help you break down at a high level, what this is going to cost we’ve shared some price ranges with you below.

Step 3: Get onsite quotes from pool renovators and other contractors
Most of our customers tell us they’ve had 2-3 quotes, before making their selection. You want to be able to understand what your options are, and you most certainly want to meet the person who is going to be doing the work and have them assess the job on site.
Providing a quote for pool renovation over the phone is not only unprofessional, it is a major red flag. We have heard of contractors using Google Earth or similar software to view your pool and provide a quote. This does not give an accurate representation of what is involved in the job, and will likely lead to contract disputes.
If you are given a quote by these means, it is no better than the rough estimates we provided for you above. You are likely to find in the contract that there is a clause for unforeseen issues or challenges that were not noted at the time of the quote. We highly recommend settling on a firm price, with all considerations made, and meeting the contractor that you are going to be working with.
Once you have received your quotes, consider who is the best fit, who you can see yourself working with, and finalize your project budget with that company.
Plan the order of operation
If you are doing a major pool renovation that involves coping, decking, or pool surrounds, Duraglaze recommends getting these out of the way first. The bottom of the pool is the lowest point on your property, and everything that is done around the pool will fall to the bottom, causing a huge mess. The last thing you want is to have a beautiful new surface installed, and have it damaged by offcuts, glue, grout, etc. So we always follow the same practice — surrounds first, interior last!
